Sometimes i foster for all breed rescues. Not long ago, i took in a foster dachshund/beagle mix. She is 2 years old and is just precious. She is and active girl but will lay down and snooze too. She is housebroke. I do have a doggie door but she does seem to know to let you know she has to go out if the doggie door is closed. We are learning each other. Her name is Camry. She was rescued from a shelter after her person/family dumped her there. I have no idea why she was dumped but i am sure it was for no good reason at all. If anyone is interested in her, they can contact me thru my blog here. I will then direct them to the rescue that is responsible for her.

During the past 7 months, i have learned exactly who my friends are. Actually i knew who most were but have learned that an old friend is one of the best. I am leaving out names here to protect feelings and identity.
I had an awesome day today and accomplished a lot.
I did learn something from the Lord. I know he is my redeemer and i am solely reliable on Him and none other. I can't do anything alone. I can only do all WITH HIM.
I do sort of feel defeated in a task i have tried to accomplish that past 6-8 weeks. However while the door isn't closed on that task, i don't feel in my heart that it will come to fruition. But whatever God's will for my life is, i am happy with it because He knows best.
"Thank you Father for the love you have not only for me but for those that love you and follow you. You have our best interest at heart and only want the best for us. Thank you for forgiveness, grace, and mercy. You have blessed me beyond belief. I am humbled. In Jesus name, Amen."

I am getting out more now and doing things. I went to BHRG's basset bash in November and had a good time.

I am spending more time in God's word and am enjoying it more and more. Why shouldn't i? God is my comforter and provider. I am thankful for his grace, mercy and love.

I have recently put in a doggie door into the back of my house so my hounds can come and go especially at night so i can sleep better without interruption in having to get up and let them in and out. What a blessing a doggie door is. Whoever created this one is a genus in my opinion.

I am getting curtains put up in the house and it is looking a lot more cozy around here now. I also found a box of pictures, prints and paintings and have gotten most of them put up now. I didn't have any pictures hung in my bedroom so most of these are now up in there. Sure makes the house a lot more homey with pictures and curtains up.

As you can see, i have a deck attached to the rear of my house and to the side of a covered screened in porch. I wanted to enclose it some to prevent small kids from falling and also to keep my dogs on the porch for their safety should i need to move a vehicle or lawn mower within or out of the back yard. The deck just seems much more secure with the slats in place now.

I am enjoying my house. I love working around the house and working in the yard. Today i got one of the swings hung in the shed and the other swing i plan to put on the porch soon. I will get pictures asap to share.

Feeling lonely

My sweet husband passed away on June 18, 2011 from lung cancer. Early on i was very busy with normal business and also looking for a house to buy and finally getting settled in. Now that i am settled in my new house, i am now realizing a sense of loneliness. This isnt happening all the time but on occasion.

My friends and family have gone on with their normal lives. But mine isnt normal anymore. No friends close by to hang out with or do things with. I know God is telling me to spend more time with him. I need to listen. It would be nice to share that time with someone tho.

I am not particularly interested in remarrying or a "relationship".

I do enjoy my independence and "my time" but too much is too much.

Dating sites are crazy. The men on them are typically looking to mooch off a woman who can support herself. I wont allow such activity from a man. If he works, then he can support himself and not ask for big money items as some men do.

Lord, i pray for peace and relief from my loneliness.

I am blessed to have a sweet Step-Daughter and her husband Daniel and their kids Newton and Alex. Quite often, i am invited to go on outings with them as well as i invite them with me too when i go out somewhere.

Today, they invited me on an adventure but i was not aware of what i was to be doing or where. So it was a big surprise for me.

As you can see in the pictures, i was taken to a beautiful creek and assisted as Peggy and Daniel caught crawdads. Peggy's dad loved eating them but i never did at that time. Tonight, i did eat a few and they were pretty tasty.

I am very thankful to my family for sharing their day with me and sharing a surprise with me.

Thank you Daniel and Peggy and the kids. I love you all.

EVERETT BAGBY

Everett Bagby became obviously ill in late February 2011 and to be exact, I took him to the doctor on February 21, 2011 because he couldn't breath well. His x-rays showed how entire right lung to be white on the x-ray. I knew this wasn't good before the doctor said a thing. The doctor said that he thought Everett may have pneumonia. I was suspicious of something worse from the beginning because i wasn't catching anything from Everett.

On March 3, we were given a firm diagnosis of lung cancer. Then on March 5 we learned it was adenocarcinoma to be exact. Adenocarcinoma especially in stage 4 which is the stage Everett had is not curable but treatable in most cases.

Everett took 3 treatments but the cancer continued to grow regardless. On May 27, Everett suffered a stroke. He lost partial use of his right side. He went to physical therapy to learn how to help me help him after he came home.

He came home on June 8. He was home for 10 days and passed away at 7 pm on June 18.

He is much missed but he is in a much better place than the rest of us here on earth.

RIP sweet Everett. I miss you and love you.

Introducing Rosie a mini dachshund

Rosie came here recently as a new foster. Rosie wants to be an alpha dog so we are working on that. Us HUMANS are alpha and she must accept other dogs in her circle. So far her progress is coming along fine.
She has to be treated for those nasty heartworms before adoption.
She seems to like her sweater but if she gets too hot she try's to rub it off. She is very comical sometimes.

AnnaNoelle's new forever home

AnnaNoelle came out of the Etowah county shelter where the vet said she should be put down due to glaucoma. Not on mine and Cindy's watch! She came to me on December 17, 2010 as a foster. On December 25, 2010, Christ's birthday, I announced to my husband Everett and to AnnaNoelle that she had her forever home with us. She seems to understand as her step has picked up and she is ever so happy. She is slowly gaining weight from a recorded weight of 39 on December 23.
She had surgery to remove her diseased eyes on December 23 as well as her spay surgery.

My horse, Rose

Rose left me on June 4, 2009. We believe she colicked but was too far
out in the pasture for us to know she was in distress. Otherwise she
was a healthy 22 year old girl.
July 23, 1987 Rose came into this world around 11:30 at night. I was
there to assist with the birth. While a stubborn girl, she has been a
special loyal horse for me as was her mom, Dolly.
I miss her terribly and always will.
Having horses in my life is a chapter closed for me. The relationship
I had with Dolly and Rose can't be matched and I won't try.
RIP my sweet Rose. I love and miss you.

Our Wedding

On October 19, 1996, Everett N. Bagby and i got married in Concord, Alabama near Hueytown, Alabama. We married on horseback as we had met because of our love for horses. There are more pictures to scan of our wedding but these are some pictures i found when going thru a drawer recently. The white horse in these pictures is Rose. Rose was born to a special mare named Dolly. I had both mares until they died. I miss them both.
My grandmother whom we called CC is in these pictures as are my brother, Reed and his wife Wanda.
These were some very good years of my life.
We dont have horses anymore due to their deaths but we have some very fond memories we will always cherish. RIP CC, Rose, and Dolly. I love you all.
Randy Arnett is also in one of these pictures with another friend Betty Thomas. Randy went to be with the Lord after a battle with cancer. He was a precious man and missed by his friends and family. He left behind a precious wife and daughter.
When i get a chance, i will scan more wedding pictures to share in my blog. It helps to have memories where they can be kept hopefully safe and able to be viewed and shared.

Devon came to me 4 years ago from a shelter in Alabama covered in his own waste. I bathed him and cut his nails and it took 3 days for him to come to me again. He was vetted and stayed with me for about 4 months and i then decided to adopt him.
Devon didnt trust anyone else including my hubby for a very long time. After 2 years, he would get up on the couch near my hubby and it took an additional year for him to learn to snuggle with hubby.
Devon went with me on trips quite often. I so enjoyed his company and miss him so.
You see, Devon had lymphoma and was just diagnosed about a month ago. He was put on prednisone and even tho he ate fairly well most of the time, he dropped weight as if he werent even eating.
Just a few days before i sent him to the bridge, he started pooing dark watery poo and i knew he was bleeding internally.
At that point, i decided it was time to send him to the bridge. I know he was ready and miss him terribly. There is a HUGE hole in my heart and life.
But God has opened a place here for another needy hound.

Jeffery's gotcha day

Jeffery came to BHRA we think from Shelby County, Alabama. He got adopted out twice and came back. The first time he came back he was a very sick boy with pneumonia. The second time was a bad adoption.He got adopted by a school teacher of all people. He was adopted for a teenaged boy. We checked on him several times and for a while, we got responses that said all was well. Then one day i got a phone call from the vet's office telling me to call the police in the city he got adopted in. So i called the officer and found out he was picked up as a stray. He wanted his "owner" to come in or he would go to the pound. The woman who adopted would do so. So Jeffery went to the pound for 7 days. Our founder went to pick him up at the end of his 7 days as required by Alabama state law. He was then brought to me. I took pictures of him and he was in horrible condition. I knew i should be able to get a cruelty charge on the woman who adopted him as he came back to us 15 lbs lighter than when he left us. He had so many fleas, you couldnt see his skin and he was filthy. Off to the vet we went immediately and he got bloodwork and a few other things done. I put him in the bathtub and scrubbed on him for around 45 minutes until i got the fleas all killed and Jeffery clean. When he came back to my house, he was horribly hungry and had to be crated to keep him and other safe. He was a serious garbage cruiser and would attack if you tried to remove him from the area to clean up the mess. The first time this happened, i had to pick up the garbage can to boot him in the head to keep the attack from happening. This was the only time that happened to me and once with Everett on a different ocassion. We worked with him and taught him that biting us wasnt a good thing to do and now he gets in our laps to get loving and give us kisses. The magistrate/court clerk gave us our warrant for the woman's arrest for animal cruelty and it went to trial in March of last year 2008 The woman was sent to a back room with me and the prosecutor. She never would look at me in the face. She was fined 500 dollars and court cost. She was ordered to do 25 hours community service and pay restitution to BHRA to the tune of 157 dollars. Jeffery still hates kids but does great with all other animals. We are proud to have him as part of our pack. We love you, Jeffery.

On May 2,2009, we had our basset bash with a theme of Bassets Gone Wild. We think there were around 200 bassets there this year and it was a fun time.
Over 6000 dollars was raised for the hounds.
My husband and i won 3 baskets and 2 basset statues at the bash.
2 bassets went to previous adopters this year and one to a new adopter.
One of the two adopted will travel in a month after the couple returns home from a trip.
Congratulations to Wilbur, Mater, and Whatley.

Just a few years ago, i had the priviledge to meet and become great friends with Sarah McEwen. She has been such a blessing to my life. On 4-22-09, Sarah went to be with Jesus. Her memorial was on 4-26-09 at Christ Independent Methodist Church in Jemison, Alabama. Here are pictures of her picture and her family.
I had a hard time in the church service today knowing she should have been in the pew near me. However she wasnt but was in Heavel worshiping in person. I miss her so much and cried alot during the service. Two of the members sat close to me and made me more comfortable with my sorrow.

Homewood Police Fundraiser for Special Olympics

Friday, 4-24-09. the Homewood Police Department did a fundraiser for Special Olympics along with many other departments across the state of Alabama. As their animal control officer i assisted with this fundraiser as did some of the motor scouts.
I was able to get pictures get some pictures of our illustrious boys in blue in some of their more amusing moments. I work with a great bunch of guys and am most proud of my association with them.
Just the two motor scouts were able to raise over 1000.00 for this event.

Devon has been very sick lately and has spent alot of time at the vet. At first it was presumed he may have lymphoma but we are now thinking and hoping it is a tick born disease he has been suffering with. He is now on doxycycline and prednisone. He is not eating well but is coming around and eats people food but not the canned food the vet sent home with him.

We are PRAYING and hoping for the best and are happy Devon is at home at least for the weekend.

Nick has been rehomed thru rescue

During the weeks after Nick began to get better, he learned he felt good and could dominate where possible. So he and Devon, our tri colored male basset hound began to get into fights. We felt like it was best for Nick to go where he could live with other friends his own size. Thru a local doberman rescue, he has already found his forever home and was to be delivered today. He plays well with cats and will be living with 5 cats.

The adoptive mom is ecstatic about her new charge and cant wait to get him home.

Fox 6 News from the Birmingham Alabama area asked to use a basset for a promotional for Do Dah Day which is a fundraiser for our local humane society. That is the Greater Birmingham Humane Society.

So Amelia was the one who worked best for this promo. The video has been uploaded to youtube. Here is a link to the video. It is quite comical in my opinion. also Amelia was not yelled at during this taping. All yelling was done toward the camera, not Amelia.

Nick is blossoming well these days. He is finally over his neuter and is almost ready to start hearworm prevention. He has about a week to go and can start that. His coat is beginning to really shine.
As long as he gets to play for a while each day, he settles easily at night to just be loved on.
Notice his chest is getting larger and his personality is coming out in the second picture here.
The hubby took pictures of him from his intake, then 5 days later, and from yesterday when these pictures were taken to work with him to show his working buddies how well he is doing and that it show you how getting rid of intestinal parasites and heartworms can make a dog blossom.
Nick is still in the working process of training so he is a good boy in the house and with other dogs. Dogs are no different than kids in their need for discipline and being taught manners. Nick is certainly learning the whole life thing in this way.
Thanks are given to God for bringing Nick into our lives and to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society for allowing us to adopt Nick.

Nick has been with us for almost a month now. His anniversary date with us for a whole month will be March 4. He is learning to be calm and be loved. He is rarely still but sometimes we can get him to be quiet and get pictures.
The pictures here are of him laying on top of me snuggling.
He has now been neutered and treated for heartworms and will go on heartworm prevention in a couple of weeks.

Nick incoming and homecoming

Nick comes to us as a cruelty dog. His story is still pending but he is now our dog. Nick came in at 38 lbs on February 4. On February 9, just 5 days after he was rescued, he now weighs 47 lbs. He has been integrated into our pack of 7 basset hounds, one mixed rottie, and a mini doxie very well. When he was introduced our cats, he just sniffed them and went about his business. He has already learned to give sugar to us and is doing remarkably well.

Nick as he is now called is our newest addition. Nick was a cruelty dog rescued by a local humane society officer whom i happen to know. Well due to lack of funding, Nick was almost put down with a bad case of heartworms. Nick is a young adult intact male and only weighed 38 lbs at intake. He will be neutered and get a much needed dental as soon as he gains 10 lbs. He will also be treated for heartworms at that time.

My husband had mentioned just recently wanting a doberman so i called him and told him Nick's story. So we decided to give it a try. I took Nick to our vet where he is right now and he will be picked up next week when my hubby can pick him up himself. Nick will be his dog and they need some bonding time.

Remember that these are the first pictures taken of Nick coming from a cruelty situation. He wont look like this for long. I will repost more pictures once he has had some time to gain weight.

Amelia's new home

Amelia was adopted to a lady who ended up in a domestic violence relationship. After she separated from her husband, Amelia needed a new home where she could be loved and spoiled. While i fostered Amelia for about 6 weeks, i knew she was here to stay.

My life is quite often stressful. So last weekend, i told my hubby i wanted to take two of our hounds to the lake and walk some. So here are the only two pictures i took. It was a peaceful day and we all, hounds included had a good afternoon.

I thought the picture of the of the fluffy stuff on the bank was pretty but the best picture is the one of the lake and greenery.

Working as an animal control officer, i have seen many pets dumped at shelters with no place to go. While many pet owners "think" their pets can be rehomed, many are put down before the relinquisher even leaves the building.

Just one shelter in the state of Alabama puts down as many as 400-800 pets per month. That is one shelter among many. I could name quite a few. There are Chilton county humane society, shelter county humane society, two shelters in Mobile county, two in Tuscaloosa, two in just Jefferson county. Blount county, Saint Claire county, etc. Can you imagine that each of those shelters puts down that many pets per month? Those shelters are only a few just in the state of Alabama alone.

If people would spay and neuter their pets, many of those euthanized pets wouldnt even have to be rescued or euthanized. Just one litter of puppies that "find good homes", cause that many puppies in one shelter to be put down.

This is reality, not a sob story.

Please spay and neuter your pets.

If those moving to apartments and non pet friendly homes would put their foot down and not rent those dwellings, then apartments and home owners would be forced to allow your pets. There are many places across the nation that allow pets. It just requires searching and diligence. Your pet knows the feeling of being abandoned just as us humans do.

Abandoning pets does cause great grief for the pet and if they find homes, it causes behavioral problems that those new families have to deal with.

Give your pet a hug tonight. many dont know the blessing of aloving home.

two mixed breed dogs in need of homes

Mobie is a small 22 lb boy that wandered up to a lady's home in Mobile. Thus the name given to him. When found, he was very timid and didnt trust anyone. Since being with us, he has learned to trust alot more but still has to be brought in the house in our arms to be more comfortable in the house.

Mobie has been vetted completely and treated for heartworms too. He will be ready for adoption in about 20-30 days.

His adoption fee is 100.00 which will cover his vet bill.

Walter is another mixed breed dog who also came to us from the Pensacola area with a phone cord around his neck. He spent some time with his rescuer until he came north where he has stayed with us here at basset land. Walter too has been completely vetted and is now ready for his forever home.

Walter weighs around 50 lbs. He would likely be great in a home where the adopter is an active person who loves to jog or walk alot.

He is good with other dogs, cats, and is reported to be housebroken by his rescuer.

His adoption fee is also 100.00 which covers his vet bill.

basset hounds galore

Well over the past few weeks, our rescue, Basset Hound Rescue of Alabama has taken in so many bassets that we are no longer able to rescue any more hounds. We just dont have the foster space to accomodate them until someone fosters a few of them or adopts a few hounds.

We recently took in

Milo, a beautiful tri colored male who is mostly black

Monte, a tri colored male from Hattiesburg, Mississippi

Francie, a stray out of Chilton County, Alabama

Mr. Peppers, a basset puppy out of Shelby county, Alabama

Peaches who had been adopted from BHRA and dumped at a high kill shelter in Birmingham, Alabama and numerous others who are being treated for various things at our rescue vet.

So if anyone reading this blog is interested in fostering a basset from our rescue or any other rescue in your own area, we all appreciate foster homes. They are our greatest asset.

You can also adopt from us or a rescue of your choice.

The bassets or other dog breeds sure do appreciate forever homes where they are loved and cared for.

Jeffery, our foster hound is now ours

Last December, our rescue, http://www.bhra.org/ got a basset back from an abusive home where he had been adopted 6 months earlier. I had him revetted and got all the documentation together and prosecuted the woman, a teacher with great success. Jeffery suffered not only neglect but shows serious signs of physical abuse too. Jeffery has let us know with no problem that he wants to live with us for the rest of his life. Jeffery gets along so well with our other dogs and cats that he is now a part of our family. Welcome home, Jeffery!

Otis Copus

Otis Copus is my recently adopted Pot Bellied Pig. He was a stray in rural Alabama and taken to my vet's office where i adopted him. He has been neutered and will now be the mascot for the police department that i am employed by.

He is about 3 months old.

He went to the police department the day after i adopted him and was a big hit with my chief and the rest of the staff.

Recently, a friend and i went to Gulfport, Mississippi to help a relative move. I have never been to the Mississippi gulfcoast but was just amazed at the beauty.

The weekend of January 19, 2008, middle Alabama had a good snow. This isnt common for Alabama but fortunately i was able to get pictures of our snow day. The interstate was passable thankfully to make it possible for me to travel the roadways.

i am getting my tractor serviced today hopefully

I bought a small tractor a few years ago. I have tried to keep it serviced and find it easier to do so while still in the winter months.
Lately the battery has been dead and i am in much need of the tractor so i went ahead and called to have it serviced. They are supposed to come to do it hopefully today if they have the parts needed and will also put a new battery in it if needed.
Being out in the pasture on my tractor is one of my main ways of peace and solitude. I get to see more of God's creation and his peace.

My Christmas season

During Christmas i was sick with a bacterial respiratory infection. However i did get to play Santa for a 10 year old boy along with my hubby.

This family adopted a basset from the rescue i volunteer with and so we had fun delivering the basset girl to her new family.

After Christmas, i did go to the doc and got some meds so i could get well.

I did enjoy all the rest i got while at home during this time. I also enjoyed seeing a boy smile on Christmas. He was surprised and happily so.

Our little Hollee girl went to the bridge on November 23.

She suffered some serious injuries which she couldnt overcome.

We sure miss our little Angel Hollee girl terribly. She would give some kisses especially early in the morning.

During the night around 2 i think, the dogs (8 of which are bassets) began to go nuts. We couldnt figure out why until a little flying squirrel stuck his neck out from under some covers on the couch. Well when i moved the blanket, out comes the squirrel and the race is on. 8 bassets were on the run after the squirrel and we pulled the dresser out and pulled the couch out and finally the squirrel went up under an old ice box where Harley, one of our cats got it and killed it. Then one of the dogs got it and then another dog got it and then i picked it up and threw it in the garbage. What an ADVENTURE!!!!

Thanksgiving Day

Today, my hubby went to work. He was sick but trudged on anyway.
I went to a friends house for Thanksgiving dinner and fellowship with some sweet friends. I was able to bring home a plate for the hubby to enjoy for supper. I didnt need supper tonight as i was wayyyyyyyy too full for more food.
God has been good to me and continues to bless me with wonderful friends, hubby, family, and sweet pets.
I hope all has felt the thanksgiving that the pilgrims did a long time ago.

got a new camera

I have a friend who has a neat camera that is small and when she went to a office supply store and saw one for 79 dollars, i had to make the stop and get one. So i am sharing an example of what the camera does.

Here is one of the rescue hounds in my care until she is adopted.

Jenna was rescued from a local Alabama shelter and was taken to our main rescue vet where she was found to be emaciated and had malnutrition. Jenna now has gained alot of weight even tho she does appear to be skinny still. She does need to gain some more weight but is a happy girl now.

She is one of my blessings and we are happy she is now healthy and happy.

My best friend and i went to Cullman, Alabama to get a dog into a new home. While driving up, we saw the most beautiful colors and were able to get pictures. Please enjoy the picture. I have all the pictures loaded into my photo album but this one was one of the best examples of the beautiful fall colors.

Georgia basset bash

Last weekend myself and a friend took 2 of our own dogs and one foster dog to Georgia's basset bash. http://www.bhrg.org/ to see how they do their fundraiser. It was alot of fun too. Lots of food, belly rubs, and good friendship.

Some folks were even interested in the foster kids we had with us.

One foster boy that was being fostered for http://www.bhra.org/ in Georgia came back for some much needed vet work.

One person that i enjoyed meeting was Wendi Prince who has created a retirement home for older basset hounds. It is called houndsabound.

Here is one of her seniors as well as other pictures taken at the bash. The hound with the small girl is one of the foster boys up for adoption. He loves kids and gets along with them very well. He will be on some heart medicine for life but is otherwise very healthy. He just needs that forever home where he can thrive.

My Basset Hounds

Over the past few years, i have really become a basset hound fan/lover. I started with Lucy, a red and white basset hound, then came Jaime, who my husband wanted to adopt after losing another dog to the bridge. Then i wanted to adopt Devon, our foster boy. Then came DaisyBelle who was only here for a few days before going back to her foster home. Hubby couldnt get her off his mind so we adopted her too. She is his snuggle bunny. Then almost a year later, Hollee who had been adopted from the rescue i volunteer with was in need of being returned but before making it back to us, got attacked by presumably a coyote and after spending a week at the lady's vet, came back to BHRA. She spend almost 2 months at our rescue vet and after some friends of mine raising the money to pay her vet bill, the rescue allowed us to adopt Hollee.

Then we have last but not least is Sally Sue. Sally Sue needed a new home to circumstances unknown to me. She had to have surgery to remove her diseased eyes due to glaucoma. She is now a happy healthy hound.

We also have 3 cats and one horse. There are also numerous basset hounds that come here for safety while they are vetted and then move on to foster homes.

We also foster horses for our vet.
